Narrative text is a type of writing that tells a story. It has a clear structure, includes characters, settings, and a sequence of events, usually with a problem and resolution.

Activity 1

Read the text below carefully!

After reading this story about Malin Kundang, I understand the importance of respecting and honoring our parents. The story shows how Malin Kundang became successful but forgot his roots and disrespected his own mother, which led to a terrible curse. It reminds me that no matter how far or rich we become, we should always remember where we come from and treat our parents with love and kindness. The legend also teaches about consequences — disrespect can bring harm not only to ourselves but also to our relationships. This story from West Sumatra is a powerful lesson about family, gratitude, and humility.

A long time ago, in a peaceful village in Java, lived a poor widow who desperately wanted a child. One day, she met a giant who gave her a magical cucumber seed. The giant promised that if she took care of the seed, she would have a daughter, but in return, the child must be given to him when she grew up

The widow planted the magical seed and soon, a beautiful baby girl was born. She named her Timun Mas, which means “Golden Cucumber.” Timun Mas grew up to be kind and brave. However, the giant reminded the widow that the time was coming for him to take Timun Mas away.

To save her daughter, the widow gave Timun Mas four magical items: cucumber seeds, needles, salt, and chili. When the giant came to take Timun Mas, she ran into the forest. Along the way, she used the magical items to stop the giant: the cucumber seeds grew into a thick jungle, the needles became a sharp bamboo forest, the salt turned into a salty sea, and the chili created a burning fire.

Thanks to her bravery and the magical gifts, Timun Mas escaped the giant and returned safely to her village. She lived happily with her mother, free from fear. The story of Timun Mas teaches us about courage, cleverness, and the love between a mother and daughter.
